Herbal Tea OEM Packaging: Filter Mesh, Pyramid Bags and Canisters Compared for Shelf Life

Herbal tea is the most packaging-sensitive format in the health food category. Take one formulation, pack it in a plain non-woven sachet in one case and in a nitrogen-flushed foil pouch inside a canister in the other, and after six months the aroma difference is obvious to anyone who opens both. Yet brand owners routinely treat packaging as a question of appearance only. In herbal tea, packaging is a functional part of preservation: it carries moisture barrier, oxygen barrier, light protection and aroma retention simultaneously. This article sets out how filter mesh, bag format and outer barrier structure interact, and how to turn a shelf life from a number someone proposed in a meeting into a conclusion supported by data.

Herbal Tea OEM Packaging: Filter Mesh, Pyramid Bags and Canisters Compared for Shelf Life

Filter mesh: non-woven, nylon, PLA and silk

The filter bag is the first layer of packaging and the one the consumer actually sees. Four materials dominate. Polypropylene non-woven is the cheapest, seals well by heat, and suits broken leaf and powder formulations; its drawbacks are poor transparency and a cheap hand-feel. Nylon mesh gives high clarity and strength and shows whole flowers and fruit pieces to best effect, but it has only moderate heat resistance and is not biodegradable. PLA, made from corn fibre, is biodegradable with clarity close to nylon and is a genuine advantage in European export and premium positioning, but it costs more, has a narrow heat-seal window, and demands tighter temperature control on the packing machine. Silk-type materials - PET mesh or composite non-wovens - sit between nylon and non-woven as a mid-tier option.

A practical selection rule: does the contents have anything worth showing? If the formulation is broken or powdered material, non-woven is sufficient and expensive transparent mesh adds no value. If it contains whole rosebuds, chrysanthemum, goji berries or fruit pieces, the visual premium of transparent mesh converts directly into shelf price. Sealing method matters too - ultrasonic sealing needs no adhesive and is cleaner, while heat sealing requires a sealable layer in the material.

Bag format: flat sachet, pyramid and stand-up

Format governs the space available for the leaf to expand and therefore the extraction efficiency. A flat sachet compresses the contents into a thin sheet, so leaves cannot fully open and extraction is slower - acceptable for broken grades that give up their flavour quickly. The pyramid, or tetrahedron, provides real internal volume so whole leaves and flowers open completely and extract evenly and fast; it is the mainstream choice for flower and fruit blends, at the cost of higher material and machine investment. A stand-up bag with a base gusset sits between the two, offering good shelf presentation.

From a production standpoint, pyramid machines generally run slower than flat sachet machines and are more sensitive to web tension, and that shows up directly in the conversion fee. For small minimum orders and slow replenishment, flat sachets are the economical choice. For a premium positioning with a long product life, the pyramid's fixed costs amortise comfortably.

The outer pack: where shelf life is actually decided

The filter bag itself provides essentially no barrier. The outer pack is what determines shelf life. Herbal tea has four enemies: moisture, oxygen, light and foreign odour. Foil laminate (PET/AL/PE) offers the best barrier - oxygen-proof, moisture-proof and light-proof - and is the standard specification for extended shelf life. Metallised laminate (VMPET) is the next tier down, cheaper but with a thin aluminium layer that develops pinholes after creasing. Transparent laminate blocks almost no light and only suits short-turnover product or use inside an opaque outer carton.

Formulations with volatile aroma compounds - mint, rose, citrus - have higher oxygen barrier requirements and usually need nitrogen flushing or an oxygen absorber. Formulations containing oils, such as nut pieces, flaxseed or hemp seed, carry the highest oxidation risk and should go straight into foil with an oxygen absorber, with a deliberately conservative shelf life. One caveat: oxygen absorbers must be matched to the product's water activity, because the wrong grade can in fact accelerate mould risk.

Turning shelf life into a justified number

The common industry practice is to look at comparable products and declare eighteen or twenty-four months. It carries almost no weight when a quality dispute arises. The disciplined approach is a stability programme: store finished goods under defined conditions and test at set intervals. Accelerated conditions are typically forty degrees and seventy-five percent relative humidity, sampling at one, two, three and six months. Long-term conditions follow the real storage profile - twenty-five degrees at sixty percent, or thirty at sixty-five - sampling at zero, three, six, nine, twelve, eighteen and twenty-four months.

For herbal tea the test panel usually covers sensory attributes (aroma, liquor colour, taste), moisture, microbiology, and where a marker compound is declared, its content. The interpretation rule is straightforward: if all attributes remain within specification through six months of accelerated storage, that generally supports a provisional eighteen to twenty-four month shelf life; the shelf life becomes formally confirmed only as far as the long-term data extends. The point is that a shelf life is not a promise. It is a conclusion with data behind it.

Cost and minimum order: the practical constraints

Packaging selection comes back to cost in the end. Custom-printed foil pouches carry plate charges and minimum quantities, typically ten to thirty thousand pieces. Pyramid material minimums are higher still. Canisters involve tooling, with tin tooling running from several thousand to tens of thousands of RMB depending on specification. For a first market test, the usual compromise is generic stock packaging with a label, reserving custom print for the second order once demand is proven.

There is one cost item that is frequently overlooked: changing pack dimensions cascades into case count and freight. The same number of sachets in a different carton footprint can shift logistics cost per case by more than twenty percent, and the effect is magnified on export orders. Working out pack dimensions, case count and case volume together at brief stage is far cheaper than re-tooling later.

For brand owners, packaging selection in herbal tea OEM comes down to balancing barrier performance, shelf presentation, cost and minimum order. Decide how long the product must hold on shelf, who it is for, and how large the first run will be, and the answer usually resolves itself.
