Chewable Tablets in Pressed Candy OEM: Hardness, Grittiness and Flavour Release

Among the enquiries that reach a pressed candy OEM factory, chewable tablets rank just behind ordinary lozenges in frequency. The difference is fundamental: the consumer bites and swallows instead of letting the tablet dissolve, so hardness, grittiness, flavour release and disintegration all need their own logic. Brand owners who press an existing swallow-tablet formula into a chewable shape typically end up with a piece that is either too hard to bite or so crumbly that the flavour is gone in two chews. This article covers how the material system is assembled, how hardness and friability are balanced, how grittiness and stickiness are resolved, and which parameters must be watched from trial run to commercial production.

Chewable Tablets in Pressed Candy OEM: Hardness, Grittiness and Flavour Release

1. How chewable tablets differ from ordinary tablets

An ordinary pressed candy is built for disintegration and slow dissolution in the mouth, so hardness and friability are set by transport tolerance. A chewable tablet has to fracture cleanly the moment teeth close on it and then break down into a paste with saliva. It must therefore survive packaging and shipping while staying crisp rather than tough, and brittle rather than sticky. Those two requirements pull against each other, because strength comes from pressure and binder while easy chewing comes from porosity and brittleness. Chewables also tend to carry more flavour and functional actives, yet the chewing window lasts only a dozen seconds. If the flavour is over-encapsulated or adsorbed by the excipients, the first bite tastes flat and the later chews turn bitter. The first design step is therefore not pressure but a rebuilt material system with a quantified sensory target.

2. Building the material system: polyols and diluents

Polyols form the fill system of most chewable tablets. Sorbitol gives a supple chew, xylitol brings a clear cooling sensation but absorbs moisture readily, erythritol delivers a strong cooling effect through endothermic dissolution yet has low solubility and turns gritty at high load, and isomalt comes closest to conventional confectionery texture at a higher cost. Most formulas blend two or three polyols, using sorbitol as the base and xylitol or erythritol to tune sweetness and cooling. Among diluents, microcrystalline cellulose improves compressibility and gives structure during chewing but causes a powdery, throat-clinging sensation at high levels, while dibasic calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate add bulk and hardness along with extra grittiness. Binders are usually povidone or pregelatinised starch, held at the minimum level that still compresses, because excess binder makes the tablet chewy and sticky. Settle the polyol blend first, then top up tablet weight with diluent.

3. Balancing hardness, friability and disintegration

Target hardness for chewables sits well below that of ordinary tablets. Beyond the useful range biting becomes laborious, and in cold conditions the tablet is more brittle and can damage teeth. Friability has to stay low because chewables are mostly sold in bottles or pouches, where tablets rub against each other in transit and powdering or chipped edges are immediately visible. Disintegration time, meanwhile, is not a case of shorter being better. Chasing the tens-of-seconds disintegration typical of swallow tablets usually means a loose structure that shatters into powder on the first bite, which is a worse experience rather than a better one. The sensible target keeps disintegration short enough for the actives to release properly in the mouth and stomach without compromising chew. The three attributes are coupled: fix the base structure through formulation, fine-tune with tablet weight and pressure, then confirm with friability data.

4. Handling grittiness, stickiness and flavour release

Grittiness comes from two directions. One is coarse raw material, solved by milling and screening: actives and polyols are usually taken below about eighty mesh, and moisture-sensitive botanical extracts should be used within the same shift so they do not cake. The other is slow dissolution of the polyol during chewing, solved by particle size grading, blending fine powder with granulated material so the fines dissolve quickly for an initial flavour burst while the coarse fraction provides structure. Stickiness normally signals excess binder or a blend weighted too heavily towards hygroscopic sorbitol, and is corrected by rebalancing the polyol mix. Flavour release can be designed deliberately: split the flavouring, adding one portion at the final blend stage so the first bite delivers, and using an encapsulated portion for the later chews to mask the bitterness that otherwise appears towards the end.

5. Matching compression parameters and tooling

The compression window for a chewable tablet is narrower than for an ordinary one, bounded above by hardness and friability and below by chewability. In practice larger punch diameters are used to lower the pressure per unit area, and a round, flat-faced, bevelled-edge punch remains the safest profile. Shaped and engraved punches look better but concentrate stress at the corners and raise friability sharply, so radiused edges should be built into the tooling design from the start. Pre-compression matters just as much: a moderate pre-compression stage expels air from the powder bed and prevents capping, while excessive pre-compression traps air and produces lamination. Fill depth, pre-compression force and main compression force should be tuned against three curves at once, tablet weight, hardness and friability, taking at least twenty tablets per adjustment and recording the data before moving on.

6. What to watch from trial to production

Scale-up risk in chewables comes from three places. The first is blend uniformity: actives are dosed low while flavourings are dosed high, and because the two differ in particle size and density, a larger blender changes both dead zones and shear, so multi-point sampling for content uniformity is mandatory at pilot scale. The second is ambient humidity, since polyol systems are hygroscopic; without proper dehumidification the material cakes in the hopper and shows up as weight variation and sticking. Chewable suites are therefore run at low relative humidity. The third is sensory drift in storage: a tablet that has picked up moisture turns from crisp to tough, so end-of-shelf-life texture is not the texture measured at release, and accelerated studies must be paired with sensory panels. Written into the pilot protocol, these three points are what make commercial output stable.
