Pressed Candy OEM by Consumer Segment: Tablet Format Choices for Glucose, Sport, Beauty and Seniors
Pressed candy is the most versatile format in contract manufacturing. One rotary tablet press, a different set of tooling and a different formula, and the same machine produces products aimed at entirely different buyers. That versatility is also where projects go wrong: many brands fix the actives and the tablet weight first, then go looking for an audience. The tablets get made, but the taste, the swallow and the dosing frequency do not suit the people meant to buy them. In pressed candy OEM work the sequence should be reversed - lock the segment first, then work backwards to format, load, flavour and pack size.

1. Glucose control and weight management: taste above all
These consumers take the product daily and for months, so palatability outranks onset speed. Polyol systems are standard here, but the polyol has to suit the format. Xylitol delivers a strong cooling note that works well in small lozenges. Erythritol absorbs very little moisture and suits chewable tablets. Sorbitol is the cheapest option but demands tighter humidity control throughout production and packing. This group is unusually sensitive to cloying sweetness, so the usual recommendation is to keep sweetness in the low-to-middle range and lift the profile with a small amount of acidulant or mint rather than piling on more sweetener. Tablet weight typically lands between 0.5 and 0.8 g, taken two or three times a day - far easier to sustain than one large tablet.
2. Sports nutrition: load and frequency lead
Sports formulations are about dose. Peptides, branched-chain amino acids and electrolytes generally need a high active load, so a 1.0 to 1.5 g tablet with a diameter beyond 12 mm is normal. The difficulty is not compression; it is swallowing. Once the diameter exceeds about 13 mm and the thickness passes 7 mm, a measurable share of users resist taking it. There are three practical answers: switch to an oval or caplet shape, improve surface finish with a film coat, or split the daily dose across more tablets of lower weight. Timing matters too - sports products are taken around training, so disintegration must be quick, which pushes the disintegrant choice towards non-gelling grades such as crospovidone.

3. Beauty-from-within: appearance counts as much as taste
Repeat purchase in the beauty segment depends heavily on the experience, and in these briefs how the tablet looks and tastes is frequently decisive. Shaped tooling - hearts, petals - two-tone compression and coloured film coats are all available; the cost is higher tooling spend and longer press set-up. Fruity profiles outperform botanical ones by a wide margin, but fruit flavours can clash with certain plant extracts, so aroma compatibility testing belongs in the sampling stage. This group also prefers small, low-calorie, sugar-free tablets, usually 0.6 to 0.9 g, in packaging that reads as portable or giftable rather than clinical.
4. Older consumers: swallowability and adherence come first
Senior formulations invert the usual logic. Tablet weight and load matter less than whether the tablet goes down comfortably. Experience suggests keeping the diameter between 9 and 11 mm and the weight between 0.45 and 0.7 g; beyond that, swallowing resistance rises sharply. A film coat noticeably reduces the chalky mouthfeel and the off-notes that older users detect. There is also a practical adherence issue: this group often takes several products a day and misses doses, so compliance packaging - weekly organisers, blisters printed with weekdays - works better than a plain bottle of one hundred. Taste sensitivity declines with age and these consumers tend to prefer sweeter profiles, which conflicts with sugar reduction; the priority needs settling during formulation, not after.

5. Pack size should follow the consumption cycle
Count is not arbitrary. Glucose-control and senior products work well in 30 to 60 tablet monthly packs that keep the first-purchase threshold low. Sports products suit 90 to 120 tablet bottles matching a training block. Beauty products convert better in 15 to 30 day packs, often boxed. Format also has to match hygroscopicity: tablets containing polyols or enzymes soften quickly in humid conditions, and individual blister cavities provide far better moisture barrier than a bottle, at the cost of higher unit price and minimum runs. Giving the contract manufacturer a target retail price before quoting lets them design the packaging to a number instead of guessing.
6. Six things to settle before the brief goes out
Translating a segment into engineering terms means answering six questions: who is the target consumer and what age range; how many tablets per day and what total daily load; the maximum acceptable diameter and weight; flavour direction and sweetness range; the target retail price band; and the expected first order quantity. Once those six are fixed, the formula, tooling, process route and packaging largely follow. Hand a manufacturer nothing more than "a tablet for blood sugar" and three or four sampling rounds is the usual outcome, with the calendar and the sampling budget both overspent.
